Part One - Using Layers To Ask Questions

  1. Zoom into the Toronto Area or another major US or Canadian city and try to define the boundaries of the city with students.
  2. Under the “Layers” section turn on the “City Boundaries” and “Populated Places” layers.
  3. Examine other cities and towns in the USA and decide with the students on how boundaries might be created there.
  4. Add a few more layers to the area.

Students could be asked open ended questions: What patterns do you notice using the various layers? Why do you think this pattern exists? How can you confirm that this is a pattern?(Ask an online expert)

Part Two - Use Latitude and Longitude to Identify Major Cities of the World

  1. Under “View” menu select “Latitude/Longitude Grid.”
  2. Search for a City or Country to get the Latitude/Longitude.
  3. Ensure that “Borders” are checked off, in order to easily identify political borders.

Students could be asked to complete a City/Country Scavenger Hunt
